Check the handle is seated tight and the wedge is snug before you swing it, and knock any sharp factory edges off the face with a file so they do not leave marks in your work.
Here is my honest caveat, and it is a safety one. Three pounds is at the top of what I would hand a brand-new smith. That said, a cheap import set is a reasonable way to get moving, as long as you go in with clear eyes. The anvil: mass first, brand second
The anvil is where a starter kit lives or dies, and it is where the bundles cheat you hardest. A real anvil needs a hard face that throws the hammer back at you, which we call rebound, and enough mass to sit still while you work. The little cast lumps in cheap kits have neither.
My own anvil is Bessie, a 148 lb Trenton, and she is what I measure everything else against. You do not need 148 lb to start, but you want as much mass as your budget and your back allow, because mass is what makes forging efficient. Understand what that buys you: a cast anvil at 50 HRC has a softer face and softer edges than a forged or hardened-face anvil, so it will dent and mushroom over time and the rebound is nothing like a Trenton. Eye protection you will actually wear

The oil flared and took my eyebrows, and I kept my eyesight by luck. Eye protection is not the accessory in a starter kit. It is the reason you still have two working eyes to admire your first hook.

The forge and the odds and ends
The forge is the piece a boxed kit almost never includes honestly, and it is the one decision that shapes your whole shop. You are choosing between coal and propane. I run both, a coal forge for heavy stock and forge welding and a propane forge for fast, even heat and most day-to-day work, so I am not in either camp by default.
For a first forge, most beginners are better served by propane: it lights with a match, holds a steady heat, makes no smoke to fight with the neighbors, and does not ask you to learn fire management before you learn to forge.
