The first question almost every new smith asks me is how heavy their anvil should be, and they are usually surprised by the answer. Weight matters, but not the way the "get the biggest anvil you can afford" crowd makes it sound. Let me walk you through what actually drives the decision, so you buy once instead of twice.
Why weight matters at all
When you swing a hammer, you want the anvil to send that energy back up into the work, not soak it up and shudder. A light anvil moves under the blow. Some of your effort goes into shaking the anvil instead of moving hot steel, and you get tired faster for less result. Mass under the face is what keeps the anvil still so the metal takes the shape.
The common rule of thumb is a roughly fifty to one ratio between anvil and hammer. A two pound hammer likes about a hundred pounds of anvil under it. That is a guide, not a law, but it explains why a beginner swinging a normal one to three pound hammer lands in the hundred to hundred and fifty pound range. Go much lighter and the anvil needs to be bolted down hard to work well. Go much heavier and you are paying for and hauling mass your hammer will never fully use.
Rebound matters more than the number on the scale
Here is the part the weight obsession misses. Two anvils of the same weight can work completely differently depending on how hard the face is. Drop a ball bearing on a good anvil face and it should bounce back most of the way, seventy percent or better on a quality anvil. That rebound is the anvil returning your energy. On a soft cast iron shape the bearing barely bounces. All that effort dies in the metal.
So a hard, flat, well-anchored 120 pound anvil with strong rebound will move steel better than a heavy anvil with a soft or badly swayed face. When you go to look at a used anvil, bring a ball bearing. The bounce tells you more than the stamp on the side.
The weight classes that make sense
Instead of chasing a single number, think in ranges:
- Under 70 pounds. Portable and fine for small work, jewelry-scale forging, demos, or taking to an event. Usable as a first anvil if you anchor it well, but you will feel it move under heavier blows.
- 100 to 150 pounds. The home-shop sweet spot for general blacksmithing. Heavy enough to work efficiently under a normal hammer, light enough for one person to wrestle onto a stand. If I could only tell a beginner one range, it is this one. Bessie, my own anvil, is a 148 pound Trenton, and she has never once felt too small for the work I do.
- 200 pounds and up. Lovely to work on and worth it if you swing a heavy hammer, do a lot of drawing out, or run a striker. For most hobby smiths it is more anvil than the hammer can use, and it is a real job to move.
Steel, not soft iron
Whatever the weight, you want a hardened working surface. A good anvil is either forged or cast steel, or the old wrought-iron pattern with a hardened steel face plate welded on top, like the classic Trenton and Peter Wright anvils you still see on the used market. The cheap imports labeled as anvils but cast from gray iron are what smiths call ASOs, anvil shaped objects. They are soft, they eat your hammer energy, and the face dents and mushrooms. Save the money.
If a proper anvil is out of reach right now, you have better options than a soft cast shape. A heavy block of medium-carbon steel stood on end gives you a small, dead-hard working surface with enormous mass directly under the hammer. A cut piece of forklift tine does the same. Plenty of good smiths started on exactly that, and a hard improvised surface will teach you more than a soft store-bought shape.
What I would tell a friend
If you are buying your first anvil and you want the short version: look for a steel anvil between 100 and 150 pounds, check that it has a hard face with good rebound and a reasonably flat top, and anchor it to a solid stand at knuckle height. Do that and you will have an anvil you never need to apologize for, whether you keep smithing as a weekend thing or it takes over your garage the way it took over mine.
Skip the weight arms race. A well-anchored, hard-faced anvil in the right range will outlast you, and the money you save goes toward tongs and a better hammer, which is where a beginner actually feels the difference.
