WEN 6515T: the 1 by 30 most people should actually start on
This is the machine I would put in front of a new knife maker who is not sure yet. It is a 1 by 30 inch belt sander with a 5 inch sanding disc bolted to the side, driven by a 2.3 amp motor, and WEN rates the belt at up to 3160 feet per minute. It is cheap, it is small, it sits on a bench, and 1 by 30 belts are sold at every hardware store on earth in every grit you could want. That belt availability is a bigger deal than it sounds when you are learning and going through abrasive fast.
What it does well: finish work, small blades, sharpening, handle shaping, and learning the motion of grinding without a big investment. What it does not do well: hog off a lot of steel in a hurry, or stay cool on a long grind. The short belt heats up, and a 2.3 amp motor will slow down when you lean on it.
