The chamber and temperature figures for the Simond single and the Hell's double come from a specs roundup at KnifeUp; the made in USA and 2300 F claims are Hell's Forge's own. If your budget is tight and you just need heat on steel, this is the entry point most beginners actually take. It is a single burner rectangular forge rated to 2600 F, with a stainless SS-304 burner nozzle, one inch of ceramic fiber and a firebrick floor, and a chamber around ten inches long. That length swallows most hunting, kitchen, and EDC blades without trouble.

What you are buying at this price is heat and a body, not refinement. It will forge knives. The tradeoff is that everything around the core is built to a number: owner reports and roundups flag fiddly assembly and regulators that vary unit to unit, and the long term durability signal on these imported forges is genuinely thin, so I am not going to pretend it is proven. If you go this route, budget a few dollars for a coat of rigidizer on the wool before first fire and check every threaded fitting with soapy water. Hell's Forge single burner, made in the USA

This is the one I would hand most new knife makers who can stretch a little past rock bottom. It is a single burner propane forge made in the USA, sized by the maker for exactly the work you are doing: hunting knives, chef knives, general small stock. Rated to 2300 F, one inch ceramic blanket over firebrick, and it ships with a container of the maker's refractory coating to protect the wool, which tells you they know where these forges die.

The reasons to pay the small premium over an import are support and consistency. When a US maker sells thousands of the same unit, the owner base is deep and the parts are here. You can run one burner for a single blade and light the second when you need to bring a longer bar or a welded billet up fast. If you already know you are headed for Damascus, camp choppers, or hardware alongside knives, this is the one that will not box you in.

The cost of that capacity is fuel and noise. Knife makers on the forums generally prefer burners entering at a tangent so the flame swirls around the chamber and evens out the heat, which cuts down on hot spots along a blade. On the Hell's Forge double burner, the most useful firsthand account I found is a working owner's writeup: the forge is fun, plenty of people including the author have successfully made knives on it, it is very noisy, and you must be careful not to get flux on the ceramic blanket or, in the owner's words, it melts it like water on a sugar cube. Safety at the propane forge

A propane forge is a controlled fire and a source of carbon monoxide, and it deserves respect on both counts. This is the part I never soften.

Ventilation first. Run a gas forge in open air or in a space with real cross ventilation, never a closed garage. Carbon monoxide from a running forge will put you down before you know it is happening.
